đȘ Mirror, Mirror On The WallâŠWhy Arenât Leaders Better?
Weâve got speakers, books, courses, TED Talks, LinkedIn gurus, and probably a squirrel somewhere teaching leadership on TikTok.
So WHY, with all this brilliance floating around, arenât leaders better?
Letâs break it down. And just so you knowâŠit might sting a little.
𧱠1. The Status Quo Machine
Most organizations pick future leaders the same way:
đ âHey, you think like me, act like me, and wonât rock the boatâŠperfect!â
This is how the same leadership style gets recycled for years.
If you keep choosing people who are âjust like us,â youâll keep gettingâŠwellâŠexactly the same results.
Leaders, take a risk: hire someone who disagrees with you.
Wild concept, I know.
đŻ 2. No Purpose = No Power
If you donât know your purpose as a leader, youâre basically running a marathon with your shoes tied together.
Your purpose should guide:
Your decisions
Your conversations
How you treat people
How you show up when things get messy
If youâre out of alignment, own it, clean it up, move on.
âš My purpose: âCreating possibilities for individuals and organizations to become extraordinary.â
(And yes, that means telling the truth even when itâs uncomfortable.)
đŹ 3. FEP: The Silent Leadership Killer
FEP = Fear. Ego. Pride.
A charming, but dysfunctional trio that should not be driving anyoneâs leadership decisionsâbut often does.
FEP says:
âDonât tell staff the truthâŠtheyâll panic!â
âDonât admit mistakesâŠyouâre the boss!â
âDonât ask for helpâŠyouâre supposed to KNOW everything!â
Spoiler: none of that leads to extraordinary leadership.
Coaching, therapy, books, trainingâin this day and age, theyâre not optional. Theyâre survival.
đ 4. Authenticity (Yes,
People Can Smell It)
Employees know when youâre faking it.
Customers know when youâre faking it.
Even your dog knows when youâre faking it.
Inauthentic leaders donât get effort, trust, or loyalty.
Vulnerability isnât weaknessâitâs currency.
If you want people to follow you, let them see the real youâŠeven the messy parts.
đ 5. Training That Actually Sticks
Great leadership training isnât a slideshow, a TED clip, and a breakout room where one guy overshares.
The best training includes:
â Hands-on practice
â Real conversations
â Teaching what youâre learning
â Safe places to experiment and fail
Retention skyrockets when people do instead of just listen.
If your training doesnât let people practice leadingâŠitâs not leadership training.
đ So... Why Arenât Leaders Better?
Because becoming a great leader takes:
Self-awareness
Purpose
Risk
Honesty
Practice
And actual work
The good news? We can start fixing that.
Yesâwe. Right now.
